The Importance of Servicing – A Case Study

Graham and Avril Johnston set out on a spectacular adventure across the Baja Pennisula, beginning in Mexico City, leading to picturesque locations across the Pacific on their sail boat ‘Dream Away’.  Prior to beginning their journey the Johnstons realized their RFD liferaft was in need of servicing.  To spare any delay and to ensure their survival equipment was in optimal condition the Johnstons made their way to their local authorized RFD service station, Duncan Y Cossio SA, based in Mazatlan city.  Commenting on the sight of the unpacked raft the Johnstons stated “We watched it’s unpacking and were pleased to see what excellent condition it appeared to be in”.

Upon further inspection by the facilities personnel they discovered that a core part of the raft’s pressure relief value needed replacing.  This is a vital element of a liferaft as any problems with the pressure relief value could prevent a raft from inflating properly.  With the identification of the problem, and the peace of mind they would be avoiding any possible equipment errors in a potential emergency situation the Johnstons were happy they had made the decision to go to the service station, “We were mightily pleased we had gone for the service early and left the crew to get it fixed”

Unfortunately the service station did not have the spare that was needed for the repair.  Therefore RFD Beaufort was contacted directly with inspiring results, “We had a fantastic response from our email to RFD, the manufacturers. Not only had this amazing woman found the part we needed but was ready to send it via courier as soon as we provided the destination address, all for no charge, and she included a spare”.  After the repair was made the Johnstons were able to continue with their dream journey across the Pacific with the knowledge their RFD liferaft had been fully serviced and was certified for use.
